Werribee level crossing days are numbered

The removal of two Werribee level crossings is on track, with a tentative bidder announced last week.

The state government announced that an alliance led by McConnell Dowell, Arup and Mott McDonald submitted the winning tender to remove the Kororoit Creek Road level crossing in Williamstown North by the end of 2018 and duplicate part of the Altona loop.

If the alliance meets the government’s performance measures with this project, it will then have the contract to remove the Abbotts Road level crossing in Dandenong South, followed by Aviation Road in Laverton, Ferguson Street in Williamstown, and the crossings at Cherry and Werribee Streets.

A state government spokesman would not confirm if this means that the Werribee level crossing removals would be fast-tracked, saying only that “they’ll be gone at the very latest by 2022”.

In March, the Level Crossing Removal Agency completed geotechnical investigations and field surveys (to locate underground utilities and identify areas of environmental and cultural significance) at the two Werribee level crossings.

Level Crossing Removal Authority project director Tony Hedley said the Werribee crossings were some of the worst in Melbourne, with about 20,000 vehicles using them each day.

Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow welcomed the announcement, and called on the state government to add the Hoppers Crossing train station level crossing to the list of 50 level crossings to be removed statewide.
