A busy Werribee-based welfare agency needs hands on deck to help run its programs.
Werribee Support and Housing chief executive Carol Muir said the agency needs more volunteers to help with jobs including collecting food from donors, unpacking boxes into fridges, and delivering food to homes.
“We don’t function without volunteers,” Ms Muir said. “We welcome volunteers of all ages, from all walks of life.
“We have asylum seekers volunteering here, volunteers who reflect all demographics of the local community.”
She said volunteers can give as little or as much time as they choose.
Werribee resident Karen Bishop has volunteered at Werribee Support and Housing for five weeks, saying the experience had been “enlightening”.
Since she started, she’s helped out with food parcels and the Christmas program, stocking fridges with food.
“I come in five days a week, and I absolutely adore it,” Ms Bishop said. “You see people coming in with their heads down … and when they walk out, it’s like they’re standing taller.
“It’s great to be a small cog in that.”
Jack said he looks forward to coming in to Werribee Support and Housing to volunteer.
He helps in a range of ways, from delivering fruit and furniture, to gardening.
“Whatever is required, I do it,” he said.
“It is good to fulfil my day doing good things with good people.
“When I finish, I go home happy I spent my day doing something good. It is very rewarding.”
