When Ian Hovey joined the Werribee Rotary Club 29 years ago, it was an invitation-only, exclusively male domain.
While Rotary has changed drastically in the past three decades – Werribee Rotary now has many female members and those interested in joining need only sign up – its adage of service above self has not.
Werribee Rotary, which has about 35 members, will showcase its volunteer work later this month at an information night intended to attract new members.
Mr Hovey, the club’s membership and marketing co-ordinator, said many people still did not understand how Rotary worked.
Recently, the club hosted a 200-kilometre trek from Wangaratta to Werribee to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital’s Victorian Paediatric Palliative Care Program.
The club will soon start a project to create a new, clean water system in Gulu, Uganda.
“We want people to be aware of what Rotary does in the community and around the world,” Mr Hovey said.
“There are a million things that Rotary does … we’re only involved in a small amount of those things.”
The Werribee Rotary Club information night will be held on Tuesday, February 23, from 6.30-7.45pm, at the Italian Sports Club, 601 Heaths Road, Werribee.
