The Weerama festival celebrated its 40th anniversary with a colourful and vibrant parade along Watton Street on Sunday.
Festival president Marcel Mahfoud said that despite wind and rain being forecast, plenty of people turned out for the street festival.
“Everyone was all smiles and you can tell the people in the parade really value that part of the festival,” he said.
DanceMax Studios students led the parade in sparkling pink costumes. They were one of several local dance schools to join in.
Mr Mahfoud said he received great comments about the young performers at Weerama.
“Some of the feedback about the youth talent in the area was amazing, including the all-girl rockband Cash,” he said.
Mr Mahfoud described several of the parade floats as “fantastic”, including one created by the Werribee Garden Club.
The garden club float, which was themed “Fun in the garden with Alice”, was reminiscent of a scene from Alice in Wonderland.
The float was dedicated to the memory of Pam Strong, a life member of the garden club who died last year.
Mr Mahfoud said Pam had served on the Weerama committee as treasurer.
“The garden club’s float was really special, both for us and the garden club,” he said.
Volunteers in this year’s Weerama festival included personnel from two Wyndham CFA brigades.
