Truganina’s newest primary school principal is in the running for a state award.

Truganina P-9 College principal Jenny Crowle has been named a finalist in the Victorian Education Excellence Awards and is one of three in the running for the Outstanding Primary Principal award.

The Altona Meadows resident was nominated by the school community, with school staff, school council representatives and parents all endorsing the application.

“It was a bit overwhelming, really, but a real thrill,” she said.

Ms Crowle was appointed principal at Truganina P-9 College in August, 2014, tasked with setting up the school ahead of its opening in 2015.

It was a challenge she relished.

“There’s a lot of opportunities, because you’re developing your staffing profile from the ground and you’re developing the curriculum,” Ms Crowle said.

“I’d been eyeing off this position for a very long time.

“I’d always wanted to open a new school and I’ve always wanted the best for the children in this area, in Wyndham, because they need the best.

“It’s a very multicultural area and we really have to show very strong learning growth – you can’t just grow at the same pace as children in all the other schools, we have to grow quicker.”

Ms Crowle has set a target for each student to achieve 18 months of learning growth each year, with every student expected to read and do homework every night.

The winners of the Victorian Education Excellence Awards will be announced on October 28.
