It’s game on for the Ethiopian Sports and Culture Federation Victoria’s annual soccer tournament.

The Australian Sports Foundation’s national grants program, Giving4Grassroots, has given the federation a grant of $10,000 towards the soccer event, which will be held in Truganina next month.

Federation vice-president Nuredin Hassan said the week-long tournament would have a theme of “diversity in unity” and feature cultural performances, music and arts.

He said the event would recognise that the Ethiopian community in Victoria was ethnically and culturally diverse.

“It’s to make people feel they belong and to build connections with the community,” he said.

Mr Hassan said the Ethiopian Sports and Culture Federation Victoria was happy for teams that signed up to participate in the tournament to include non-Ethiopian
players.

“We’re really keen to also get women’s teams involved – that gives encouragement to girls and young women from our community to get out and get active, and also children,” he
said.

He thanked Australian Sports Foundation and Wyndham council for supporting the event, which will be held from December 26 to 30 at Arndell Park Reserve, 29-49 Federation Boulevard, Truganina.

Anyone interested in playing in the tournament is invited to phone Yonas on 0431 810 799.

If you are from a cultural group which would like to perform at the event, interested in having an arts or craft stall or providing other activities, contact Mr Hassan on 0423 315 405.
