Tony Henwood’s 14 grandchildren can confidently claim to have a cool grandfather.
Mr Henwood, of Hoppers Crossing, has been a DJ since 1978 and has his own mobile disco.
He is also one of 400 competitors chosen out of 10,200 nationally to take part in the annual Your Shot DJ talent search.
At age 60, Mr Henwood is the oldest competitor to make the cut. His alias for the competition is “DJ Gramps”.
He will play a 25-minute set during the Your Shot state finals, to be held in Melbourne next month.
Mr Henwood said he was looking forward to trying out the latest DJ equipment from sponsor Pioneer during the event – a far cry from when he started out in the industry.
“Back in the early days, DJ equipment was often hard to find, and was often handmade – I made my own mixer and amplifier,” he said.
Across the years, he has also moved from using records, cassettes and CDs to digital music programs.
Mr Henwood said his favourite music to play included rock, contemporary, EDM, techno and house.
