Tidy Tradies trial

The Mickleham-Yuroke corridor has been named as a building hot spot.

Wyndham council and two major property developers have joined forces in a bid to eliminate litter on building sites.

A trial of a new program called Tidy Tradies began this month and will run until the end of October.

During the six-week trial, regular litter sweeps will be undertaken in a bid to create “clean sites”.

Wyndham environment and sustainability portfolio holder Heather Marcus said that if successful, the trial could be adopted by other councils and developers.

“Wyndham is one of Australia’s fasting-growing municipalities … new housing developments have become an extremely common thing in this area,” Cr Marcus said.

“One of the impacts of this has been an increase in litter, such as the wrappers from builder’s lunches and snacks. This litter is difficult to contain and has been found to blow away and end up in local waterways, creeks and grasslands. This problem not only damages our local environment, it impacts the visual amenity of our communities.”

Wolfdene, the developer of the Saratoga estate in Point Cook, and Lendlease, the developer of the Harpley estate in Wyndham Vale, have both signed up to take part in the trial.

The trial is being funded through Sustainability Victoria’s Innovation Fund.
