A long-serving Wyndham council employee has been recognised as a state finalist in the inaugural Volunteering Victoria Awards.

Volunteer co-ordination officer Frances Fearn, who has worked with the council for almost 22 years, was a finalist in the excellence award category for her work with the council’s Lunch with the Bunch program.

The top gong at an awards ceremony earlier this month went to the Heide Museum of Modern Art volunteer management team.

Lunch with the Bunch is a volunteer-run program providing transport for older residents from their homes to different locations across Wyndham to take part in lunches and other social activities.

The program is part of the council’s home and community care service to help elderly residents live in their own homes and maintain their independence.

Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich congratulated Ms Fearn on the feat.

“Lunch with the Bunch not only keeps our older residents independent and gives them enjoyment, it also provides an opportunity for developing friendships and new experiences,” she said.

“While the Lunch with the Bunch program was not named a winner, it’s a significant achievement to have it recognised as a finalist.

“These awards showcase the diversity, commitment and significant impact volunteers and their programs have on our community.”
