VCAL students at the Wyndham Community and Education Centre have been cooking up a storm to raise funds for a cause close to their hearts.
Teenagers from the centre’s VCAL English as an Alternative Language class have launched a project to raise money for Amnesty International’s efforts to support the 700,000 Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh, near the Myanmar border.
The Winter Warmer Comfort Food project involves the students cooking meals which are then sold for $5 to the centre’s other students, staff and organisations in Wyndham.
Teacher Julie-Anne Bennett said many of the students involved in the project were refugees themselves.
“We are very proud of the class because they have been so proactive about the need to help the Rohingya,” she said.
The comfort food project has been well received and attracted the attention of proprietor and head chef of Laverton’s Little Mekong Restaurant, Jensen Lam.
Mr Lam last week dropped in to teach the students how to make sweet corn and chicken soup to add to their menu.
Ms Bennett said the community’s response to the cause had been “great”.
