Nearly 300 speeding, seatbelt and other offences were detected on Wyndham roads over the grand final long weekend.
Police from Westgate highway patrol, the uniform branch and state highway patrol hit Wyndham’s roads en masse for Operation Scoreboard, which ran between Thursday and Sunday and targeted drink and drug driving, speed, fatigue, distraction offences and seatbelt compliance.
Overall, 296 offences were detected, including 88 speeding drivers, 80 drivers and passengers were caught without their seatbelts, 40 unregistered cars, 23 drivers caught using their mobile phone while behind the wheel and 17 unlicensed drivers.
There were also 14 drivers who recorded blood alcohol readings above 0.05, and eight drivers who returned a positive drugs test. One car was impounded as part of the operation.
In a separate operation, a 28-year-old Truganina man had his car impounded after police discovered him driving on a disqualified licence.
Brimbank highway patrol intercepted the man’s car during a booze bus operation about 2am Monday and impounded the man’s car.
When the man’s friend attended to pick him up, the 31-year-old Sunshine West man failed an oral fluid test and was driving while suspended. His car was also impounded.
Both men are expected to be charged on summons with numerous traffic offences.
