Werribee South residents are crying out for large letters and packages to be delivered to their front doors.
They’re also keen for the suburb to get its own post office.
Werribee South Ratepayers Association vice-president Marisa Berton said residents were not getting “to the door” service for packages and had to pick them up at the post office in Lentini Street, Hoppers Crossing – a 16 kilometre trip for some people.
This is despite the fact that until a few years ago, Australia Post was delivering large letters and parcels to the doors of Werribee South properties, according to association president Joe Garra.
“Now all we get is a card [to pick our parcel up],” Dr Garra said. “I’ve started getting stuff delivered to work.”
Ms Berton added: “It is extremely difficult for some elderly residents relying on public transport as the buses do not service many parts of our district.
“It is time Australia Post delivered parcels which have been paid to be delivered as a ‘to the door’ service. We are officially in a metropolitan suburb and we believe postal services should reflect this basic need for residents.”
Tanya Bradley-Barrett, from the Wyndham Harbour Owners Corporation Committee, said she picked up packages from the Hoppers Crossing post office up to three times a week because her husband was a “mad eBay buyer”.
“It’s not even the Werribee post office – it’s not convenient,” she said.
An Australia Post spokesman said a “roadside delivery” service was currently running in Werribee South, whereby letters and parcels that fitted into letterboxes and did not require a signature were delivered to letterboxes on the boundaries of properties.
He said a recent review found that it was not possible to introduce a street delivery service “for safety reasons”, but that Australia Post would continue to monitor the area with a view to “enhancing” delivery services in the future.
He said Australia Post did “not believe an additional post office is required [in Werribee South] at this point in time”.
