Self defence is about more than knowing how to use physical force.
That’s the word from jiu-jitsu coach Roan Theron, who runs martial arts centre Gracie Barra Hoppers Crossing.
The centre runs free anti-bullying and self defence classes each month, with the next reality-based self-defence course to run on September 23 from 10am-1pm.
Mr Theron said the class will cover how to avoid physical attacks, how to de-escalate events and get away from danger and lastly, how to use force if you can’t get away.
“[There is] a lot of focus on the pre-attack phase, in terms of awareness tactics, risk assessment, and the stages of violence … we also focus on how people deal with fear and adrenaline in a real-life situation, the fight-or-flight response,” he said.
Mr Theron said many martial arts schools were focused on the sports and competition aspect of martial arts, and did not consider the self-defence attributes of jiu-jitsu.
“I think there’s a need in the community. More and more people are contacting us asking about self-defence … many parents are concerned about kids being victims of bullying.”
