Platform woes on the radar

Commuters are calling for a “very dangerous” platform at Werribee train station to be raised, to make it easier for parents and senior citizens to use.

Several Star Weekly readers made the call on Facebook after a story about the damaged state of the station’s tactiles – plastic bumps on the platform which provide guides for the visually impaired – was published last week.

Many of the comments focused on how hard it was to get on and off the train at platform 2 of Werribee station.

“I recently went to the city and the return train came into platform 2, could not believe the level of the gap from train to platform,” Mary wrote.

“It’s very dangerous for older and disabled passengers as well as mums with prams.”

Julie said that the platform was “dangerous and really hard to get on and off the train”.

“I’ve seen people fall when getting in and struggling to get out,” she wrote.

Star Weekly asked Public Transport Victoria (PTV) if there were any plans to raise the platform.

PTV spokesman John Lindsay said the organisation was “looking at stations across the network to identify and prioritise where infrastructure improvements are required”.

“This useful feedback about customer experiences at Werribee Station will feed into that process,” he said.
