‘Reverse’ painting wows at Wyndham Art Prize

Northcote artist Camille Hannah has won the $10,000 annual Wyndham Art Prize.

Seventy-four Australian artists, including 10 from Wyndham, entered this year’s competition.

The competition’s judge, Monash Museum of Modern Art curator Charlotte Day, awarded Hannah’s artwork – a painting done in reverse onto a piece of perspex – first prize.

Hannah said it was “really, really gratifying” to be selected as the winner.

“I was so humbled to be named the winner, especially once I saw the quality of all the other artist’s work was so high,” she said.

Hannah said she would use the prize money to visit Germany, where she will soon be exhibiting some of her work.

“I won an art prize in Venice and I was unable to be there, so winning the Wyndham Art Prize and being able to travel with my work to Germany this time means a lot,” she said.

Wyndham council’s arts, culture and heritage portfolio holder, Cr Tony Hooper, said this year’s Wyndham Art Prize had attracted “an extremely high quality of entries”.

“Congratulations to Camille and all of the other artists that were selected as finalists for the 2018 Wyndham Art Prize,” he said.

Visitors to the Wyndham Art Gallery in Werribee can vote for the winner of the $2000 People’s Choice Award until June 11.
