Pollution levels at Cherry Creek decrease significantly

Clean up work at Cherry Creek in Laverton North is well underway, with pollution levels having dropped significantly according to the EPA.

Cherry Creek and Cherry Lake were contaminated with detergent from nearby business Melbourne Transport & Warehousing in March this year, resulting in the death of nearly 15 tonnes of mostly carp.

Due to the improvement with the lake’s pollution levels, Melbourne Water will begin to remove bunding from Cherry Creek leading into the lake, to allow normal water flows to return.

EPA will continue its monitoring program, however in the meantime, health warnings will remain in place advising people to avoid contact with the water.

EPA Western Region manager Steve Lansdell said the next stage is a precautionary approach while water flows return to natural levels in the lake.

“Our testing shows encouraging improvements from the efforts of EPA, Melbourne Water, Greater Western Water in conjunction with Wyndham and Hobsons Bay City Councils.”

Investigations into the spill are advancing, with EPA continuing to keep the local community informed through public pop-up sessions and a virtual community meeting planned for sometime in the future.
