An award-winning theatrical show developed in Wyndham will be performed in Werribee later this month.
Point of No Return is based on a true story, about a group of inmates in Tasmania’s Point Puer Boys’ Prison, which was established in 1834 to rehabilitate young offenders.
The show was written and directed by Werribee playwright Alaine Beek from Essence Productions.
The play started out as a short piece presented by students at Werribee Primary School and was developed into a play starring students from Werribee Secondary College.
The show won four awards at the Playhouse Players National Playwright competition in 2014. It is currently touring Victoria and will be performed in Werribee as the Wyndham Theatre Company’s 50th anniversary show.
Beek said Point of No Return explored themes including struggle, hardship and hope.
She said she was “incredulous” to discover that despite their circumstances, the Point Puer boys still managed to find humour in their lives and took “ridiculously stupid risks” just to lash back at authority.
“Putting youths in such horrific circumstances to fend for themselves is hard to fathom,” she said.
Point of No Return will be performed at the Wyndham Cultural Centre, 177 Watton Street, Werribee on Friday, July 27, and Saturday, July 28, from 8pm.
