Facebook site shaming disabled-carpark cheats

Frustrated Wyndham residents are going online to shame drivers who park illegally in carpark spaces meant for disabled people.

They are posting pictures on the Facebook page ‘Wyndham Disability Parking Wall of Shame’, showing cars without permits parked in spaces dedicated to disabled drivers.

The cars’ number plates are clearly visible.

One Wyndham resident, who asked not to be named, said she recently saw a furniture truck offending, but after reporting the incident to Wyndham council she was told nothing could be done because it was in a private carpark.

“I was told that because it wasn’t a council-owned carpark, not much could be done,” she said.

“It’s irritating that these people can just park there when they clearly have no disability or permit.

“People like me, who actually need these car spaces, have to walk further because of their laziness. It happens all the time.”

Wyndham chief executive, Kelly Grigsby, said staff enforced parking rules in disabled spaces on council land and within private carparks that had agreements with council.

“People found to be illegally parking in disabled spaces may receive a $152 infringement notice,” she said.

“On private land, landowners can seek the assistance of Victoria Police to ensure people are parking according to restrictions.”

Senior Constable Josh Stolk, of the Wyndham highway patrol, said monitoring parking permits was not a large part of the job, but Victoria Police did issue fines of $152 if a vehicle was found to be parked without a permit.
