He’s been an SES controller, Weerama director and helped organise Carols by Candlelight at Werribee Mansion. Now, Werribee’s Gerry Greenwood can add baton bearer to his list of achievements.
The 82-year-old is one of 11 Wyndham residents selected to carry the Queen’s Baton next year when the relay passes through Werribee on February 13.
Mr Greenwood, whose daughter nominated him for the honour, said he was thrilled to be selected.
Mr Greenwood has been active in the community since moving to Werribee in 1971 from Geelong.
He helped found Wyndham SES more than 35 years ago, and has attended thousands of call-outs, including the 1983 Werribee floods and Ash Wednesday bushfires.
He was also on the Weerama festival committee for 26 years and on the committee for Carols by Candlelight, and spent 24 years as the senior engineering officer with Wyndham council.
Integral to the build-up for each Commonwealth Games, the Queen’s Baton Relay started its global journey at Buckingham Palace in March and will travel through every Commonwealth nation and territory before landing in Australia on Christmas Day.
From there, the relay will spend 100 days traversing the nation as it heads to its final destination, the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games opening ceremony.
Other Wyndham residents to be selected as baton bearers include Donald Brennan, Bianca Findlay, Margaret Fisk, Gerry Hart, Lauryn Mark, Genevieve Mercieca, Julie Toner, Lyn Tout, Catriona Tyrrell and Michael Wells.
