The state government has announced more than 50,000 new homes will be built on land in Melbourne’s growth areas, including in Point Cook.
The land will be released across four years, as part of 12 new suburbs to be built near Point Cook, Kororoit (within the Melton municipality), Craigieburn, Beveridge, Wallan, Officer and Cranbourne.
A statement released by the government today says the new suburbs will be located in corridors that the VPA (Victorian Planning Authority) “has identified as ripe for more housing”.
“Detailed planning work will include a mixture of employment, residential and mixed-use neighbourhoods to allow residents to work locally, minimising commutes and allowing families to go to school and work close to home,” the statement said.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the 12 new suburbs “…will be places people want to live because we’re investing more than any government in Victoria’s history in infrastructure, schools and other vital services our growing city needs”.
Plans for the new suburb near Point Cook – presently known as Aviators Fields – cover an area of around 414 hectares.
The area is bounded by Point Cook Road, Aviation Road, Hacketts Road and a housing development to the north.
The land is located about 1.5 kilometres from to the Point Cook Coastal Park and includes two wetlands.
The VPA website says that it will prepare the Aviators Field Precinct Structure Plan (PSP) in consultation with Wyndham council, government agencies and service authorities.
“The PSP will sensitively consider adjacent agricultural areas and will provide residential land supply in an area with significant demand,” the website says.
“It will complement future development in the East Werribee employment precinct.”
There were no details released about how many homes could be built within Aviators Fields.
