Relay for Life sets up at new location

The Wyndham Relay for Life will be back in 2017, but this time at a different location.

Works to upgrade the Victoria University athletics track at Hoppers Lane, where the event is usually held, have caused it to be relocated to the Wyndham Vale Recreation Reserve.

Relay chairman Brendan Andrew said that despite the venue change, the annual fundraiser was still going from strength to strength.

“We still plan to put on a terrific event,” Mr Andrew said. “The new venue means new ideas.”

Among those ideas now being explored by the planning committee is a “colour explosion” at the end of the relay.

“Last year we had the balloon release in honour of people lost to cancer. It was very emotional, perfect for the event. This year we want to have a colour explosion with powder,” he said.

“Another idea is a midnight marathon; 42 kilometres, starting at midnight.”

The committee is also hoping to introduce a choir made up of Relay for Life participants. And “tribute kites” may be sold, later to be flown in honour of loved ones who have died from cancer.

Mr Andrew said the committee was aiming to attract more multicultural groups and sports clubs to the event.

The 2017 Wyndham Relay for Life will be held from noon on April 1 until noon the following day.
