A group of youths from the west have made a music video to promote COVID-safe behaviours among their peers
The video was filmed by participants in the Junubi Wyndham community support group, which is auspiced by the Wyndham Community & Education Centre.
The program is managed and staffed by people from South Sudanese backgrounds, and links young people and their families to activities and services.
Junubi Wyndham communications officer John Mashar spent three months filming the music video with five participants aged between 17 and 24 years old.
Mr Mashar said the Welcome to the Pandemic clip was parody of the popular song Welcome to the Party by Pop Smoke, with lyrics changed to promote COVD-safe behaviours.
The video was funded by the state government’s Culturally and Linguistically Diverse youth content campaign.
Mr Mashar said that along with creating digitally shareable content by, and for, young Africans to raise awareness of COVID-safe behaviours, the music video also aimed to show Junubi youth that they are part of the solution to “counter the false narrative” created conservative media about the South Sudanese community.
One of the young people involved in making the clip, Melton resident Monykeur, said the video applied a positive light to staying safe during the pandemic.
Monykeur, an actor and singer, said the Junubi Wyndham project was his first time starring in a song clip.
“It was something different for me, I have never done a music video before,” he said.
“It was nerve-wracking but also fun.”
