Mike test drives past adversity

Mike Mafersio says he is the only person he knows who has been on a Learner’s permit for seven years.

But it’s not because he hasn’t tried … over the past three years, he’s failed his driving test three times – something he puts down to his Aspergers.

He’s hoping the knockbacks are about to be turned around. Mike is 10 months into the Ability2Drive program – a specialised driver training program for people with disabilities – being run out of Iramoo Community Centre.

“It’s an absolute godsend,” he said. “I still don’t have my licence, but I’m confident I’ll get it through this program.”

Mike says the fact he doesn’t have a driver’s licence is the only thing standing in the way of him finding a job.

“I have a security licence, a forklift licence …just no driver’s licence. The course is all about learning to drive safely.

“When people get their licence, they do stupid stuff, maybe not intentionally … but I want to be the best driver,” he said.

“It’s taken me a while to grasp the road rules, but I’m nearly there.”

Mike offers some advice to others in similar situations, struggling to pass their tests.

“If you’ve tried really hard and fallen back down, don’t give up. Get back up – you can do it.

“I was in a dark place and got myself out of it. Now I’m determined to get my licence. Don’t let anyone say you can’t do something that you want to do.”

A2D works in partnership with specialised driving instructors, occupational therapists and disability professionals.
