Helping people is second nature to Margaret Farley.

So when the Hoppers Crossing resident had to quit her job as a nurse after sustaining a back injury six years ago, she found another way to help those in need.

Ms Farley spends at least three days a week as a driver for Wyndham council’s 121 Transport program, which helps elderly and disabled Wyndham residents get to and from medical check-ups, shopping trips and social activities.

“It’s fantastic being able to help somebody else who’s in more need of help than you are,” she said.

“It gets you out of the house when you could stay at home and feel sorry for yourself. You get more out of it than what you put into it.”

Wyndham councillor Mia Shaw said Ms Farley was one of more than 12,000 Wyndham residents who volunteered for community projects and causes.

“I’ve managed volunteer programs in the past and it made me realise how lucky I am and how a relatively small effort on my behalf could make a big difference to someone else’s life,” Cr Shaw said.

More volunteers are needed to join the 121 Transport program.
