Midwife is mother of all jobs

As a midwife at Werribee Mercy Hospital, Jess Lowery loves helping mothers to bring their babies into the world.

For Ms Lowery, who is also a registered nurse, midwifery has been her chosen career for 12 years.

She said she had always wanted to work with children, but thought it might be something she would pursue later in her working life.

“But then I met the staff here [at Werribee Mercy] and they encouraged me to pursue it, and I haven’t looked back,” she said.

“There is quite a lot of job satisfaction – you are working with someone at what is probably one of the most difficult times of their life.

“To be able to support them through that, and then go and see them the next day and see them with their baby, is wonderful.”

Ms Lowery said midwives with Werribee Mercy Hospital’s maternity services rotated through the labour, postnatal and antenatal clinics.

She also works in the Midwifery in the Home team.

Ms Lowery said one of the joys of her job was working with the culturally diverse women of Wyndham.

She is also planning to give birth to her second baby at the Werribee Mercy in July this year.

Werribee Mercy Hospital is undertaking a recruitment drive ahead of an $85 million redevelopment due for completion later this year. The hospital is searching for emergency nurses, mental health nurses and midwives, along with other roles in clinical fields.
