Drug program to focus on family help

A free six-week program aimed at helping the families and friends of people who use drugs or alcohol will begin in Werribee next month.

The InFocus education program, developed by the Family Drug Help team from the Self Help Addiction Resource Centre (SHARC), will offer practical support, information, advice on coping strategies and the opportunity for those attending to connect through shared experiences.

The program, which will start on Thursday, March 22, is facilitated by professionals who have been impacted by someone else’s drug and alcohol use.

Issues such as stress management, addiction, setting boundaries, communication, family dynamics, understanding guilt, family violence, adolescent violence towards parents and self-care will be covered.

A past participant in the program, who asked to remain anonymous, said her “world changed forever” when she found out that her son was taking drugs.

“I learnt how to say no without feeling guilty,” she said. “I learnt that I could walk alongside my loved one and not try to fix and control.”

The InFocus sessions will run from 6-8pm from March 22 to April 26, at Anglicare, 2 Market Road, Werribee.

Bookings are essential. Phone Family Drug Help at SHARC on 1300 660 068 for details or go to sharc.org.au.
