Werribee Hospital Foundation’s 5KOK challenge is back this year, bigger and better than ever.

Foundation chief executive Leanne Down said the fundraising campaign would be held in October for Mental Health Month.

After registering online, participants are encouraged to get moving across five days of the month, by running, walking, riding, swimming – or completing any other form of exercise – for a total distance of five kilometres.

Those involved can share their personalised online page and photos – using the hashtag #whf5kok – with family and friends.

Participants are being asked to seek donations, with 100 per cent of the funds raised to go towards Werribee Mercy Hospital’s community mental health services.

Ms Down said it was important for everyone to take care of their mental health, just like physical health.

“Just because it (mental health) is invisible to the eye doesn’t mean it’s not important,” she said.

“Exercise can really help when it comes to taking care of your mental health.

“It increases blood flow to the brain and stimulates chemicals like endorphins and serotonin.

“It can also help with our moods, anxiety, mental clarity, improve productivity and memory and you can even get a better night’s sleep.”

Werribee Hospital Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation that relies on the generosity of supporters.

The 2021 5KOK challenge is being sponsored by Villawood Properties and Alamora Estate.
