Mental health a growing concern for youth

More than 40 per cent of Wyndham’s young people are concerned about their mental health, a new survey has revealed.

Wyndham mayor Josh Gilligan said the council’s Youth Services team surveyed almost 1000 young people across the municipality between May and July this year.

“The opt-in survey was for people aged 12 – 25 who lived, studied, worked or regularly spent time in Wyndham, providing council with important data about how Wyndham’s young people are coping during this difficult time,” Cr Gilligan said.

“Respondents reported that in the three months from May to July 2020, 44 per cent were concerned about their mental health, while 55 per cent were concerned about their stress levels.”

Cr Gilligan said while this was concerning, it was important for young people to know that the council has a range of free services which can help them with their mental health.

“This includes our youth and family counselling services, online resources with mental and physical health tips and activities connecting young people with their peers,” Cr Gilligan said.

“Whether you want someone to talk to about issues that are affecting you or simply want a welcome distraction, we encourage you to access council’s services.

“When it comes to counselling, no issue is too small to seek help for, and our experienced and professional counsellors welcome your calls on any topic requiring support.”

Cr Gilligan said the council’s counselling team could connect young people with free bulk billing psychologists if they required specialist support, and also offered family therapy as well.

“As for our online activities, we have art classes, gaming chats, Friday night quizzes, a podcast, exercise tips and so much more to keep you active and engaged,” Cr Gilligan said.
