Meals on Wheels “rewarding” for volunteers

When Carol Stoate retired three years ago she didn’t want to sit around at home all day.

The Tarneit resident and former disability services worker looked for volunteer work around the community, which is where she came across Meals on Wheels.

She and friend Sandra Thorpe now spend two days a week delivering meals to elderly Wyndham residents.

“It’s such a great scheme,” Ms Stoate said.

“When I was working, I worked with people with intellectual disabilities – it’s what I’m comfortable with.

“I just love the people. They’re mostly elderly, all retired. I enjoy meeting people and talking to them. Sometimes delivering meals is the only contact these people have for the day – a lot of them are living on their own and wouldn’t normally see anyone else.

“It’s very rewarding,” she said.

Ms Stoate delivers meals to people in two Wyndham retirement villages, and a few houses in between, as part of the program managed by Wyndham council.

Wednesday, August 31, is National Meals on Wheels Day.

This recognises the work of the 87,700 volunteers involved in 740 meals-on-wheels delivery services around Australia.
