Lid lifted on nightmare commute

Is your daily commute a nightmare?

Wyndham council is calling on residents to share their #nightmarecommute on social media on September 14 as part of National Nightmare Commute Day.

Wyndham mayor Henry Barlow said the nation-wide campaign would highlight the hours drivers and public transport commuters waste getting to and from work, school or university.

Cr Barlow said about $400 million in funding was needed for the council’s top five unfunded transport priorities:

•Black Forest Road train station (about $20 million).

•Hoppers Crossing level crossing removal (about $100 million).

•Four-lane Ison Road bridge over the Melbourne-Geelong rail corridor (about $50 million).

•Outer Metropolitan Ring Road planning and land acquisition funding from Princes Freeway to Western Freeway (about $100
million).

•Western Interstate Freight Terminal and rail connections to Outer Metropolitan Ring Road and Port of Melbourne planning and land acquisition funding (about $100 million).

“Five million Australians live in fast-growing outer suburbs like Tarneit, Point Cook and Truganina,” Cr Barlow said.

“On average, those residents will spend up to 800 hours every year commuting on the crowded Werribee train line.

“We want to be able to show that our residents – like millions across Australia – face a long and frustrating journey every day.

“And we want to be able to work with the government to find a way to end that frustration.

“Politicians will need to listen and act when we ask them to extend train lines or add extra services on the Werribee line, increase carparking at train stations, and create jobs closer to home – so that people don’t have to face nightmare commutes at all.”
