A beleaguered Werribee playgroup has been given an eleventh-hour lifeline by way of an anonymous $25,000 donation.

The young parents’ playgroup associated with UnitingCare’s Werribee Support and Housing was facing the chop after Wyndham council cut funding for its program. It has been running since 2012.

A couple, who wanted to remain anonymous, heard about the centre’s plight and donated $25,000 to keep the playgroup up and running.

The donation means the group, which operates especially for parents aged 25 and younger, can continue until the end of December this year.

Program co-ordinator Sue Moger said UnitingCare was thrilled to have the donation.

“Without it, we would have had to tell Werribee parents their children can no longer attend our playgroup,” Ms Moger said.

“It would have been a major blow to our community.”
