Werribee Open Range Zoo received an injection of cuteness last week when two meerkat pups started venturing out of their burrow.

The pair were born to mum Aliki on January 14 and, at five weeks old, are slowly becoming confident enough to crawl out of their burrow to explore the meerkat exhibit.

Zoo keeper Suzanne Szabo says meerkats, which are born with their eyes and ears shut, spend the first few weeks of life in their burrows, completely dependent on parents and other adults, as their hearing and eyesight develop.

Ms Szabo says it will be another few weeks before zoo keepers determine the sex of the pups and name them.
