SKM Services has been given permission to resume accepting recyclable waste materials at its Laverton North premises.
The Environment Protection Authority last month ordered SKM, which operates sites in Gilbertson Road, Laverton North and Maffra Street, Coolaroo, to stop accepting recyclable waste materials.
At the time, EPA officers served a remedial notice to the company after observing “…large stockpiles of combustible recyclable waste materials from kerb-side collections stored without appropriate separation distances between stockpiles, buildings or the premise’s boundary”.
The EPA today announced that, after another inspection of the Laverton North site, the company was found to have met the conditions of the notice and will be able to resume accepting recyclable waste materials.
EPA chief executive Dr Cathy Wilkinson said improvements had been made to the site’s outdoor storage area, which has resulted in a reduction of stockpiled waste. She said increased distances between the stockpiles themselves had also been implemented.
“SKM has demonstrated that it has met the conditions outlined in our notices and is again compliant,” Dr Wilkinson said.
“However, EPA will continue to inspect the Laverton (North) site to ensure it remains compliant with the outdoor storage requirements.
“The community expectation is that SKM will now maintain compliance and be able to provide a valuable service to Victorians.”
The Coolaroo site remains non-compliant and is still not able to accept recycling waste.
