Latte help for a good cause

Every cup of coffee purchased at Latte Cartelle is helping to bring fresh drinking water to people in Africa.

In July, the Melbourne drive-through coffee business began a partnership with the not-for-profit organisation Buy1Give1, which helps small and medium-sized businesses make donations to worthy global causes.

For every cup of coffee a customer buys at Latte Cartelle, the company donates a day’s worth of potable water to communities in Malawi and Kenya.

Across the past four months, Latte Cartelle – which has branches in Hoppers Crossing, Truganina, Hallam and Elwood – has provided more than 51,000 days worth of water through the project.

The coffee drive-through company is family owned by sisters Allison Pickett and Linda Tsiokas.

Ms Tsiokas said she and her sister were motivated to join Buy1Give1 because they wanted to do some good in the world.

“We came to a point in our business where we wanted to do something beyond our own financial objectives,” she said.

Through Buy1Give1, the Latte Cartelle donations are transferred to non-profit groups which help to provide clean drinking water for Malawian and Kenyan residents, by measures such as supplying village families with a water pump and well, or installing water systems at schools and orphanages.

Ms Pickett said feedback from the business’ customers had been “incredible” since they began the initiative. The sisters said they hoped to reach one million days worth of water donations in the next four years.
