More than 56 per cent of Lalor residents who participated in the Australian marriage equality survey voted ‘yes’.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the results of the survey last Wednesday, revealing how each federal electorate voted.
Within the Lalor electorate – which covers Hoppers Crossing, Laverton North, Little River, Point Cook, Tarneit, Werribee, Werribee South, Williams Landing and Wyndham Vale, along with parts of Truganina and Mount Cottrell – 56,062 people voted in favour of changing the nation’s law to allow same-sex couples to get married.
In contrast, 43.2 per cent of Lalor voters (43,429 people) ticked the ‘no’ box.
Another 345 people did not make their votes clear enough for ABS pollsters to read.
A total of 100,491 Lalor residents participated in the marriage survey, while 30,127 did not vote.
Statewide, the federal electorate of Melbourne had the highest percentage of yes votes, with 83.7 per cent in favour of marriage equality.
The electorate with the most no votes was Calwell, which includes Broadmeadows and Taylors Lakes, with 56.8 per cent of people voting against marriage equality.
Overall, the majority of Australians voted in favour of same sex marriage, with 61.6 per cent (more than 7.8 million people) responding yes.
Victoria had the highest number of yes votes, at 65 per cent, out of all the states and territories.
In Parliament last week, Premier Daniel Andrews said he was “very, very proud” that many Victorians had “voted for decency, for fairness, for equality and for love”.
“For those of us who campaigned very strongly for this outcome, I do not think we can understate just how profoundly important this is for members of the LGBQTI community across Victoria and Australia,” he said.
