Wyndham will get its own Indian cultural precinct after the state government announced the creation of two Indian hubs in Victoria.
The state government, which announced its intention to develop an Indian cultural precinct in Victoria as part of its 2015-16 budget, this morning announced that Dandenong would be home to the state’s first-ever precinct.
The government also announced $500,000 for a second Indian cultural precinct, or community centre, in Wyndham.
The exact location of the Wyndham hub has yet to be determined.
The decision follows a concerted campaign by Point Cook resident Sudhir Juneja, who was keen to see the Indian hub located in Point Cook or East Werribee, which are easily accessed by the M1 freeway and would be ideal for tourists on their way to the Great Ocean Road.
Mr Juneja campaigned for the precinct through an online petition that gained nearly 700 signatures.
Mr Juneja said he was thrilled with this morning’s announcement.
“It’s fantastic news.
“I am happy with any location in Wyndham… now my work is done, and this is between the Victorian government and the local council.
“As a community, if we stand together, we can achieve anything.”
Altona MP Jill Hennessy said the the hub was a testament to the region’s growing and thriving Indian community.
“I have heard from so many locals passionate about bringing an Indian cultural precinct to Wyndham,” Ms Hennessy said.
“This is a huge win for the whole community, particularly the community members and groups who have been advocating for the west throughout this process.”
