Construction is under way on a $17 million redevelopment and extension of Hoppers Crossing shopping centre.
Work has begun to strip out the former Target store, on the corner of Morris and Old Geelong roads, back to its base and extend the size of the existing building to accommodate a wider retail offering.
Pacific Werribee centre manager Jonathan Codman said the Hoppers Crossing shopping centre would feature a new 4000-square-metre Coles and 20 additional specialty stores, including improved fresh food offerings.
“For drivers, there will also be over 1000 … carparks available on site with a new entry to the centre’s east and continued convenience through the existing west entry for visitors arriving by train and bus,” Mr Codman said.
The former Target department store, which was the centre’s ‘anchor tenant’, was shut down in August to make way for a new-look Target at Pacific Werribee.
Both shopping centres are owned by the Pacific Group of Companies.
Mr Codman said the project was likely to be complete by mid-2016.
The shopping centre will remain operating throughout construction.
Meanwhile, works are still under way on stage three of Pacific Werribee’s $370 million redevelopment.
Stage three, which will be unveiled next year, will include a two-level, full-line Myer and more than 50 stores.
The centre has already opened its Urban Diner precinct, Village Cinemas gold-class and 50 retail stores as part of the expansion.
