Children’s yoga is one of the many healthy activities on show at Wyndham’s Healthy and Active Expo.

Roopa Kanakasabapathy runs Bal Yoga for children aged between eight and 14, and she is looking forward to introducing the practice to other families.

“By doing yoga, children are experiencing both physical and mental benefits,” she said.

“It improves their focus, balances the brain, and teaches resilience to cope with negative emotions and peer pressure.

“Then, of course, they are more flexible and it strengthens and tones their muscles and improves their balance.”

Ms Kanakasabapathy said many people aren’t aware how much yoga can help children in school and regular life, teaching them exercises that will sustain people all their lives. The expo runs until September 30, and other events include Shaolin kung-fu, hip-hop dancing and lawn bowls.

Council’s community wellbeing portfolio holder, Cr Bob Fairclough, said the expo would promote the many joys of staying active.

“Wyndham is proud to present the Healthy and Active Expo, which is all about getting people moving and feeling great,” Cr Fairclough said.

For the first time, the expo will also showcase activities at Werribee, Point Cook, Hoppers Crossing, Tarneit, Truganina, Wyndham Vale and Manor Lakes. Details: www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/healthyandactiveexpo.
