Car fires prompt calls for vigilance

Truganina Fire Brigade is urging residents to report suspicious activity as soon as they see any, following a spate of car fires in the area.

Captain Colleen Goodfellow said the brigade had responded to seven car fires in the past two weeks, with each of the fires being deemed suspicious.

“We have no idea what’s led to this increase,” she said.

“From our perspective, the cars being set alight are not a particular model – there are various types, some without engines.”

Captain Goodfellow said each incident was responded to by volunteers from the Truganina brigade, as well as Hoppers Crossing, with up to 20 members working to put each fire out.

“These are resources that are being taken up that could be better used elsewhere,” she said.

She said the fires were often occurring in sections of estates between Sayers and Leakes roads.

The area bounded by Boundary, Dohertys, Woods and Tarneit roads was another hotspot.

She urged residents to report any suspicious behaviour by phoning triple-0.

She said that heading into spring and summer, the effects of such fires could end up much more severe.
