Groups join forces for Refugee Week

Two Wyndham organisations have joined forces to create more social cohesion and connect cultures during Refugee Week.

Werribee refugee resource centre New Hope Foundation and Wyndham Youth Services, which collaborate year round, hosted Saturday’s celebration at the Youth Resource Centre in Hoppers Crossing.

New Hope Foundation’s Htee Hset Tun said most Wyndham refugees were from Burma, Iran and, more recently, Syria.

She said main issues faced by refugees included language barriers, uncertainties about their rights and the law, and difficulties in finding work.

“Coming into a new country can be scary and lonely at times,” she said. “Our job at New Hope is to connect the newly arrived young people and their families to service providers.”
