Funding boost for growing suburb

The state government will provide $2.5 million towards building a community centre with open space and sports pavilions in Tarneit’s north.

The government will give the funding to Wyndham council, to put towards the construction of the centre, under the Tarneit North Masterplan Implementation Project.

The overall cost of the project, which will be mainly funded by the council, is $26.41 million.

The community centre and sports facilities will include a landscaped playground and picnic area, with barbecues and a path network.

It will be built in an area bordered by Fresco Way, Polly Parade and Liston Avenue.

Local Government Minister Shaun Leane and Tarneit MP Sarah Connolly announced the funding last week.

Ms Connolly said the funding would come from the state government’s $25 million Growing Suburbs Fund, which aims to help councils in Melbourne’s fast-growing outer suburbs to build critical infrastructure.

“This is great news for Tarneit – we’re making sure this community has the facilities it needs to thrive as more and more people move here and the population grows,” Ms Connolly said.

“I can’t wait to see the plan come to fruition and these facilities open up for everyone to use and enjoy.”

Mr Leane said the Growing Suburbs Fund was set up to ensure fast-growing communities have access to the facilities they need to thrive.

“The Growing Suburbs Fund has built a legacy of investment in our fastest-growing communities – creating jobs and delivering the facilities communities need to thrive,” he said.

“This is going to be more crucial than ever as we recover from the impact of coronavirus.”

Since its establishment in 2015, the Growing Suburbs Fund has invested $275 million in 221 community projects across Victoria.

This has created more than 7470 jobs over the past five years.
