Freeway closure postponed

UPDATE: The Major Road Projects Authority was set to close a section of the Princes Freeway on Friday night and the weekend during construction of a new Dohertys Road bridge, but the closure has been postponed due to a traffic accident.

A spokeswoman for the MRPA said that after Friday’s accident on the Princes Freeway at Laverton – which resulted in a truck driver being taken to hospital with serious injuries, after his vehicle hit a road barrier – lead to the closure of the freeway.

The spokeswoman said this meant access to the freeway was delayed and the project would not have been able to be completed within the allocated time, so the MRPA decided to postpone the works to a future date (which is yet to be announced)

The construction of the Dohertys Road bridge is part of the state government’s $1.8 .billion Westerns Roads Upgrade, which is being delivered by the MRPA.

The MRPA’s project director Frank De Santis said the authority had been planning to lift beams into place, to build the new overpass, on the weekend.
