Wyndham’s new pet owners will score a free annual tag for their pooches and moggies in a push to boost registrations across the city.

The council is waiving new cat and dog registrations for a year to give new pet owners more time to get their animals desexed, making them eligible for a reduced fee next year.

A council report found a high proportion of unregistered pets in Wyndham, based on council audits and the number of unregistered dogs and cats picked up by council officers.

Mayor Adele Hegedich said the scheme would encourage new pet owners to register their animals.

“The scheme will reduce some of the initial financial burden that comes with being a pet owner,” she said.

Wyndham pet owners have just under a month left to register or re-register their pets by April 10.
