UPDATE:

Scores of Melton and Moorabool roads have been closed following heavy overnight rain, while water levels at the Werribee River in Ballan have exceeded two metres.

The Victorian State Emergency Service has urged residents to be vigilant after minor flooding in the river catchment affected low-lying areas near the waterway and is expected to disrupt traffic.

SES have issued a flood watch for Moorabool, while VicRoads closed several roads, including:

  • Nixon Street Bridge, Melton
  • Minns Road, Melton at Toolern Creek
  • Plumpton Road, Plumpton
  • Spencer Road Bridge, Ballan

  • The roads to Ballan swimming pool and Caledonian Park

The Werribee River catchment received rainfall averaging about 34 millimetres since 9am, Tuesday.

People are being urged to never drive, walk or ride through floodwater, and farmers to move machinery and livestock to higher ground.

For flood emergency assistance, call the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening emergencies, call Triple-Zero.

PREVIOUSLY, TUESDAY 13 SEPTEMBER

Flood warnings have been issued for the Werribee River in Ballan.

Water levels at the river are steadily increasing, after the catchment received rainfall averaging about 15 millimetres since 9 am, Monday. The levels reached 1.44 metres about 4.30pm on Tuesday.

Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Peter Newham said Melton and Moorabool received between 20-40 millimetres of rainfall over the past few days.

“As far as further rain goes, there’s going to be a period overnight and during the morning where there will be another 10 to 20 millimetres and then it should ease during the day tomorrow,” Mr Newham said.

“After sunrise – maybe just passing showers or two but not in large amounts.”

Mr Newham said storms would stay over northern Victoria and there wasn’t any wind predicted for the north-western suburbs.

Meanwhile, several Moorabool roads have been closed following the wet weather.

Kellys Road Bridge in Grenville, Muirs Lane in Korobeit, Bradys Lane, Greendale, Seerys Road in Coimadai, Portland Flat Road in Gordon, and the roads to the Ballan swimming pool and Caledonian Park.

People are being urged not to drive, walk or ride through floodwater.

For emergency flood assistance, call the SES on 132 500. For life-threatening emergencies, call Triple-Zero.
