The infamous Welcome to Wezza mural is on its way out.

The mural, which adorns the wall of the new Cherry Street carpark in Werribee, will be painted over this week and replaced with a mural created by Ocean Grove artist Justin Stone.

Wyndham council will not reveal what the new mural will look like, but city life director Jenny McMahon said examples of Stone’s artwork had received the tick of approval from members of the Wyndham Business and Tourism Association.

Ms McMahon said the mural should be finished by this Sunday, weather permitting.

“We’re excited that an artwork by Justin Stone will represent the next phase of a rolling program of artworks that will enhance this area while we await the future development of the Cherry Street site as a gateway to the Werribee City Centre,” she said.

Ms McMahon said the Welcome to Wezza mural would be documented with a photo of the work to be presented to students from the Wyndham Community and Education Centre, who created the original artwork.

The graffiti-style mural received a slew of online praise and criticism when unveiled at the end of June.

“Sanctioned vandalism”, “an embarrassment for Wyndham” and “eyesore” were among the comments posted by the naysayers, but others embraced the work.

Paul dubbed it “probably the best thing that’s ever happened in Werribee!!”
