Fairclough bows out of local politics

After 11 years as the representative for Wyndham’s Harrison ward, Cr Bob Fairclough has decided it’s time to bow out of local government.

First elected to council in 2005, Cr Fairclough says his stint has been both memorable and rewarding, but he felt it is time to retire.

Reflecting on the past decade, he listed attending festivals, seeing first-hand the contributions of volunteers, the upgrade of recreation facilities across the municipality, and the replacement of street halogen lights with LED lights, as some of his highlights. He also enjoyed mentoring new councillors.

The Get Wyndham Moving campaign, which calls on state and federal governments to invest in infrastructure across the municipality, has been another thing Cr Fairclough is proud to have been involved in.

“The efforts of this advocacy campaign are now starting to pay off, with funding now committed by the state government for the Dohertys Road duplication, the Palmers Road extension, and signalling for the intersection at Palmers and Leakes roads,” he said.

Asked what he won’t miss about his council duties, Bob Fairclough admitted it would be the late night meetings.

Cr Fairclough has plans to visit family in New Zealand, spend more time visiting his two grandchildren in Sydney, and to continue as a volunteer in the Wyndham community garden and with the diabetes support program.

He urged residents to vote carefully at the October 22 elections to ensure they choose the right candidate to represent them.
