The wisdom of elderly residents at a Werribee nursing home has been passed on to younger generations as part of a school project.
VET media studies students at Mackillop Catholic Regional College visited residents at Mercy Place to take part in a Wisdom of the Elders program, in which they discuss a range of topics including fear, forgiveness, love and loneliness.
Students photographed residents and then coupled their images with some of the ‘pearls of wisdom’ residents had shared.
Mackillop media teacher Sean O’Mahoney said the six students each produced an image, which will now be displayed at the nursing home.
“It was a really interesting project for the students,” he said. “They got to hear the very different kinds of lives that these people lived, and to hear their stories.”
Student Hayley Cogo said she noticed throughout the project that the residents were very caring of one another.
Susan Frykberg, of Mercy Place, said the project was a great opportunity for two very different generations to get together.
“The residents loved having youth around them. While they are older, and some frail, they are still so wise and have so much wisdom to pass on,” she said.
The photographs were unveiled at the nursing home on Monday, and are on display throughout the centre.
