Well-rounded lessons learned by migrants

Some of Werribee’s newly arrived migrants have formed new friendships at a bowls tournament.

Hosted by Werribee Bowls Club and the Western Bulldogs Football Club’s Community Foundation, more than 100 students enrolled in the Adult Migrant Education Program went head-to-head in a roll-down. The players’s families had come from Burma, Sudan, Ethiopia, Iraq and Syria.

Rhonda Edwards, of the bowls club, said the event was a great way for students to learn English while having some fun.

“Seeing them laughing and having fun was great. It also creates a direct link to clubs if they want to continue, all while meeting new people.”

Western Bulldogs settlement services co-ordinator Kim Kelsey said the event was a two-way learning street for the migrants and those running the event. “It’s us teaching them our culture, while at the same time we learn about theirs.”
