Police detected a drunk driver travelling at 90 kilometres above the speed limit in Laverton on the weekend.
Just after 8pm on Sunday, Footscray Transit Sergeant Terry Hill was travelling on the Prince Freeway, near the baseball stadium, when he saw fast-moving vehicle.
Sergeant Hill contacted the Westgate Highway Patrol, who entered the freeway from Fitzgerald Road area, and clocked the vehicle at 177 kilometres per hour.
Just before police stopped the car, it was detected travelling at 190 kilometres per hour.
The driver, a 36 year-old man from South Melbourne, refused to undergo a preliminary breath test. He was arrested for being drunk in a public place.
The man was charged with:
– Reckless Conduct;
– Drive Under Influence;
– Refuse Breath Test;
– Manner and Speed Dangerous;
– Unlicensed Driving; and
– Drunk in a Public Place.
His vehicle was impounded. Westgate Highway Patrol spokesman, First Constable Clinton Simpson said:
“We have absolutely no time and no tolerance for this type of behaviour.
“I am surprised no-one was killed the way he (the South Melbourne man) was driving.
“His arrest right away had to happen and I had no hesitation in taking him into custody.
“Being in Highway Patrol we see some pretty stupid things, but this takes the cake.
“Our appreciation to Sergeant Hill from Transit for the assist.”
