Lights will be shone on antisocial behaviour at Werribee’s Station Place thanks to a new project funded by the council and state government.
New lighting is going up along paths and down alleyways, and public art will be daubed on otherwise blank walls to brighten up what has been dubbed a high-risk location by Victoria Police.
The art is being created by emerging local artists, overseen by popular street artist Adrian Doyle.
Mr Doyle said the art installation had taken more than two months, so far.
“It was done to brighten up the area,” he said.
Wyndham Business Tourism Association head Nick Christou, who owns Park Hotel on Station Place, welcomed the project.
“My staff now feel safe on night shift; train commuters can get off of a night safely, and taxi drivers who spend their night waiting in Station Place for a fare also feel safe,” he said.
“When I first moved here to Werribee, I saw the potential of the town.
“With stepping stones like this we are getting the town’s potential to come to fruition. It’s a great place to live, to work and play.”
Wyndham mayor Adele Hegedich said Station Place had been deemed high-risk by police, and the project aimed to help bring risk levels down.
Werribee MP Tim Pallas said the art and lighting improved the look and feel of the area, and this would attract more people to use the station precinct.
“We know [this] reduces anti-social behaviour,” Mr Pallas said.
